Business Areas

In which areas is
BaumInvest AG active?

Our two business areas are sustainable forestry and carbon compensation. Both are based on the reforestation of degraded pastureland. For this purpose, we plant mainly native tree species in order to create a near-natural mixed forest.

It is important to us that our areas are adjacent to nature reserves in order to connect biodiversity corridors and to promote natural regeneration.

Sustainable Forestry

The right solution to the demand for sustainably produced, high-value tropical timber.

Our sustainably managed mixed forests in northern Costa Rica are used in part for the production of tropical value timber. Our “Sustainable Forestry” concept combines fast-growing, shade-producing pioneer tree species, such as Cebo or Botarrama, with high-quality value timber species, such as Almendro, Pilon or Guapinol.

This is how the BaumInvest Forestry model works

This allows optimal conditions for tree growth of the valuable timber and at the same time increases biodiversity – a sustainable and economic system with a future. The trees are selectively harvested and continuously replanted. In Costa Rica, the valuable timber species need about 30-35 years to reach harvest maturity.

The result: continuously growing high value-timber from permanent and sustainable forest management.

Carbon Compensation

Reforestation as an essential and natural way to remove climate-damaging carbon dioxide from the atmosphere

Since 2007, BaumInvest AG has so far sequestered a total of 175,000 tonnes of carbon in its forest areas as part of its own reforestation and projects for companies. The carbon storage capacity of our forests is confirmed by certification according to the recognised Gold Standard in the form of carbon credits. BaumInvest AG sells the carbon credits it generates on the voluntary market for carbon-offsetting – especially to companies that want to offset unavoidable carbon emissions.

Since 2021, BaumInvest AG also offers corporate customers the opportunity to invest in forest climate protection projects for their own compensation of unavoidable emissions. In doing so, we reforest so-called Company Carbon forests on behalf of our customers. Our innovative planting concept – with native tree species and accompanying vegetation to protect the tree seedlings – is the basis for the creation of a near-natural mixed forest. In addition to carbon sequestration, this contributes to other positive effects such as the preservation and increase of biodiversity, the reactivation of soil life and the storage of water as well as the creation of jobs.

We are currently implementing the first Company Carbon Forest project within Gold Standard’s newly created “Program of Activity” mechanism for two corporate clients on a reforestation area of more than 1,000 hectares in Costa Rica. The demand for natural carbon offset solutions is increasing significantly due to ambitious climate protection goals of most European companies. We see a large growth market in this area.
